Clothing from East Greenland IV. Materials and their processing

Processing
The main aim in processing skins is to clean them and remove all traces of flesh, so that they do not rot. The skin consists of two layers: the epidermis or top skin, beneath which is the dermis, also know as corium, or leather skin. Below this is a layer of fat. In the bottom-most layer of the epidermis are the cells that produce pigment. During the processing of the skins, the layer of fat and the dermis are usually removed. The hair is also usually removed when skins are made into leather.
