Clothing from East Greenland VI. The traditional clothing of East Greenland

Under garments: naatsit
The only undergarment the Inuit wore next to the bare skin, was the pair of short breeches, the naatsit. These breeches were made of seal fur with the fur turned outside. This item of clothing was often decorated with small pieces of fur in different colours.

When weather conditions permitted, the naatsit was often the only garment worn, both in the home and outside in the settlement. There does seem to have been a taboo against walking around outside the home only in shorts. As soon as the Inuit men left their own settlement, they put on a pair of long trousers made of seal or polar-bear fur.
