To Egypt (1877) After some hesitation about his next destination, Schuver decided in the second half of January 1877 to go to Egypt. [16] He remained in Cairo throughout the month of February. To judge from the places from which Schuver sent letters to his father, he travelled overland between March and June from Cairo to Assiut, and by boat down the Nile from Assiut via Karnak and Luxor to Aswan, where he began his return journey. During these travels, which he reported in letters to the Handelsblad, Schuver hunted hyenas as well as visiting ancient monuments. He also acquired a lion cub, Jemma, which he dispatched by boat to the Netherlands. This little animal was to die a year later. Schuver also sent home some artifacts together with the lion cub, but what these were, and what became of them, we do not really know, although they undoubtedly included a scarab in lapis lazuli. This was certainly Schuver's first recorded collecting activity. |
