Again: the Balkans Schuver left London in the spring of 1880 and, after drawing up a will in Trieste on 31 May, travelled on to Istanbul via the Balkans, where he intended to join the Albanese army in order to fight the Greeks. The Balkans, and certainly the border area between Albania and Greece, were in a chaotic state at that time. At Janina, Schuver once again had the misfortune to be taken prisoner, this time by the Greeks. This captivity was also of short duration, probably because the Greeks believed his story about being a tourist. After all, had he not just visited ancient Dodona, and was he not on his way to Corfu? After arriving in Istanbul, Schuver sought permission from the Ottoman government to carry out excavations in Palmyra at his own expense. Permission was refused, so he decided to continue on to Egypt, reaching Cairo before the new year. |
