Kamoro masks Introduction

Introduction

The Kamoro, who live on the south-west coast of New Guinea, have developed a unique style of artistic expression. This Kamoro art (until recently, better known outside the country as 'Mimika Art') has so far seldom received attention in general books on the art of Oceania, Melanesia, and New Guinea.

Consequently, even today comparatively little is known abroad about this art. One only occasionally encounters examples in foreign museums, while the major collections are held in The Netherlands.[1]

The aim of this digital publication is to offer a modern link with the art of the Kamoro, an art that can pride itself on a tradition still vigorously alive today. The unique and extensive collection held at the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden constitutes a central focus for the examination of this art.
